Bunker basements – What are the insurance implications?

Children believe that if you dig deep enough you can dig all of the way to Australia! Now, as an adult we know this isn’t possible, but if I was to tell you that it is possible to dig under your existing home and create a basement would you believe me? This may still sound like a child’s imagination to many but, in reality it certainly is not. Bunker basements are big business in our cities and it seems likely that this method of adding additional space will only increase in popularity.

Bunker basements are complicated builds with plenty of potential problems, so it is vital that you use the skills of a building firm experienced in this area. Such specialist firms can provide a range of possibilities may only be restricted by a homeowners ambition and, ultimately their budget. This has been seen recently when a wealthy individual decided to build 4 stories under his home to include a swimming pool and garage!

But what are the insurance implications? Whilst the works are in force it is essential to ensure that a good quality Contract Works insurance policy is arranged. It is possible that your building contractor can provide such cover for an additional cost but, there are also numerous arguments why the homeowner should arrange this cover themselves. Whichever method of insuring is agreed, such arrangements should be agreed in advance of the works.

Once the works are complete it is important to arrange a high quality home insurance policy provided by a specialist insurer to ensure that the correct level of cover is in place.
