CCTV – Enhanced security equals lower premiums

As the quality of CCTV improves we are finding that more insurers are taking into consideration the installation of CCTV as a rating factor when calculating business insurance premiums.

You can use CCTV to protect your property but you must follow the legislation under the Data Protection Act.

You must:

  • put up a sign to let people know CCTV is being used and why
  • be able to provide images within 40 days to anyone you’ve recorded (you can charge up to £10 for this)
  • share images with the authorities, eg the police, if they ask for them
  • keep images only as long as your business needs them

For more Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has guidance on how to use CCTV cameras and storing images.
