Professional Indemnity Insurance – Some unusual occupations

Until a few years ago Professional indemnity insurance was normally only purchased by the traditional professions such as solicitors, accountants, architects, surveyors and engineers. The cover is there to provide an indemnity in respect of inadequate advice, services or design that normally results in a financial loss.

The emerging markets are technology and media companies, management consultants, design and marketing companies and recruitment agencies. These professionals are often required to carry a certain level of cover to comply with contractual conditions imposed by their clients.

There are also a surprising number of non-traditional occupations that are purchasing this valuable cover. Our friends at Hiscox have shared a list of some of the more unusual occupations! Here are just a few of my favourites:

  • Chicken sexing (well the insurance is for cock-ups!)
  • Funeral directors (no body is perfect!)
  • Proof readers (everyone makes mustakes!)
  • Horse whisperers (don’t say a word!)
  • Polygraph testing (it’s true!)

The list contains over a 100 different occupations, highlighting the fact that businesses are taking seriously there exposures to the financial risks when it comes to providing a service or advice.
