Macbeths Home Insurance Advisers - Snow Winter Home Protection

Be Prepared This Winter

We’re all aware of spring cleans and we freshen up our homes in anticipation of summer, to prepare for the new season. But did you know a winter clean can help protect our homes from the tests of the winter months?

Below are a few suggestions that might help avoid winter damage to your home in the colder months:

  • Repairing brickwork – Cold weather can have an effect on brickwork, so it is a good idea to inspect the building and fill any gaps in the mortar before the freezing weather arrives to prevent more serious damage.
  • Mould – This is caused by changing temperature and lack of ventilation. Wiping condensation off windows every morning and ensuring rooms are ventilated throughout the day are great prevention steps. A good idea is a dehumidifier if the problem persists.
  • Flat roof and seals – Make sure all flat roofs and window seals are maintained to ensure no water ingress into your home.
  • Protect outdoor taps – This is a very common problem as freezing taps will break. Simply buy a thermal garden tap cover to avoid this.
  • Clearing gutters and drains – Autumn means falling leaves and these can easily clog drains and gutters. Excess water will have to go somewhere so to avoid it being inside your property make sure gutters and drains are clear.

If you do experience any claims this winter, the Macbeth team is on hand to help and our aim is to help you resolve the problem as quickly as possible.
