Protect your Christmas Gifts

The John Lewis advert is out, Black Friday has been and gone… It’s Christmas shopping time.  Have you finished? Maybe you haven’t started! Nevertheless, Christmas means gifts. Luckily, your high net worth home insurance policy automatically protects you for these new purchases for up to 25% of your contents sum insured. But whilst you and your family are enjoying the holidays, sadly others will be doing their own window shopping, knowing full well your home is fully stocked and just waiting for the opportunity.

The Thames Valley Police have again urged us all to be extra vigilant this time of year as home burglaries reach their peak over the Christmas period. Avoid being a target by considering some of these ideas to distract unwanted attention to your home:

  • Keep doors and windows locked at all times. Keep keys out of window locks but in a close by, safe location where all the family can find them, should there be an emergency.
  • When going out for an evening, leave lights on (or even on a timer) to give the impression somebody is in, whilst also ensuring all windows and doors are locked. I even think it can be a good idea to leave a television on if you are out for a reasonably short period.
  • Ensure all gadgets and valuables are left out of sight, any jewellery or electrical gadgets that can be seen from the windows can prove too tempting for a thief.
  • Consider installing LED security lights at the front and rear of your home to ensure they are activated should someone approach.
  • Try to leave any spare vehicle on the driveway to give the impression somebody is in.
  • Always set your security alarm, even when you go to bed at night. If you do not have an alarm I strongly recommend installing one.
  • Lock all side dates, garden gates etc at the top, middle and bottom with padlocks. This should be done on all sheds and outbuildings to.
