Humans VS Bots

Here’s a question for you. How many beans make five? That may sound a bit crackers but bear with me…

These days, there are web chat bots everywhere. The problem is, after an hour of typing you are often no further ahead.

And that’s why I love speaking to people, getting to know my clients and building relationships.

A few years ago, I took a call from a potential new client. I went through all the questions and at the end of the call he said: “give me your best sales pitch”. At the time I was quite shy and not used to new business calls but I gave it my best shot (even though it was lunch time so the office was quiet and EVERYONE could hear me) I decided to speak from the heart:

“We’re a family run company. Paul Macbeth’s father started the company 30 plus years ago and we have steadily grown ever since. We pride ourselves on our customer service, we aren’t the cheapest, but we offer a fantastic service, always here to answer the phone and offer honest, fair, advice. If we feel something isn’t right for you, we will tell you. We are here to deal with your renewal, all your changes midterm, and if there was to be a claim, all you need to do is call us. We also do commercial business insurance and financial services so you could have all insurances with us and it would be one call.”

We gained a client from that call.

Although it might sound cheesy, I personally think you can’t beat a conversation with a real human. It’s good to chat through problems and issues and find a solution. That’s what I love.

So how would this conversation have gone if I was a bot…

BOT: You are through to Mandy, thank you for contacting us.
BOT: Please give me your name, address and date of birth.
Customer: I have already given you that information, please give me your best sales pitch, why should I use Macbeth?
BOT: I’m sorry I do not understand, how can I help you?

Fortunately, the Macbeth webchat is managed by real humans. So how would a bot respond to my question at the beginning of this blog?

Bot: Hi I’m Mandy, how can I help you?
Customer: How many beans make five?
Bot: Five

But the real Mandy would say…

A bean + half a bean + a bean and a half + 2 more beans. Because not everything is straightforward. Our clients get the best solutions from us because we have flare and individuality and we can think outside the box.
