More than just an apprenticeship

January 14, 2025

My mum told me about this apprenticeship and at first I was reluctant. It seemed like a very big jump and so different to anything I have ever done before. It was completely out of my comfort zone (which I think everyone could tell on my first few weeks here). The only work I had done before Macbeth was waitressing or pot washing at pubs. I had no experience whatsoever, and the only time I’d seen  an office was watching The Office on TV – but I didn’t think an office in real life could be anywhere near as fun or have anywhere near as interesting characters

My mum had always told me that everyone at Macbeth was so lovely and welcoming but I don’t think you really realise how welcoming and kind everyone is until you actually meet them.

I’ve realised that similarly to The Office, each person here has their own admirable traits which makes working here so enjoyable and fun.

Being in the Private Client team is always extremely interesting and always entertaining – from watching the team collaborate, to our team nicknames and weekly meetings.

My mentor Rachael Bromham made me feel welcome from the day I started, helping introduce me to everyone and always including me in anything that’s going on at the office. Rachael has always been extremely patient with me even when I’ve asked stupid or obvious questions. Rachael Clover really helped me with building my confidence to answer the phones, understanding when I got things wrong and  being there to help if I got stuck. Mandy was very supportive when I did my first phone call, which really helped as I was very nervous. From what I’ve observed from our team meetings, Mandy always has great ideas and is extremely creative. Carl has always been so kind to me and has always helped me with double checking my work and always gives me constructive feedback. Similarly, Nicola has always helped me out when I am stuck with work, and always has a funny or interesting story to tell me. I am very grateful to be working at Macbeth and to be surrounded by such lovely people.

I was extremely quiet and nervous when starting at Macbeth and I never thought I’d have grown as much as I have in such a short amount of time (who knew I would be answering the phone!?) I rarely started conversations with anyone here before, but now I feel comfortable speaking to everyone! I cannot wait to become even more confident and get to know everyone even more.

I am always excited to come into work. I didn’t think I would ever actually enjoy an office job but I genuinely do.

I am very lucky to be surrounded by such a great team. Everyone here is so supportive of everyone else and it’s just a really nice environment to be in.

I will be going on to be doing a rotation around the different departments within Macbeth, and I am eager to grow my learning of the business and see what’s next!
