‘Oops… I did it again’. Great for a Britney chorus, not so great when you’ve just accidentally voided your insurance cover
It might sound dramatic, but you’d be surprised how easy it is to accidentally trip yourself up when it comes to insurance. From small oversights to seemingly harmless assumptions, these little “oops” moments can have much bigger consequences than you’d expect, especially when it comes to making a claim. The good news? Most of them are entirely avoidable (once you know what to look out for).
Here are a few surprisingly easy ways to get it wrong:
“I’ll add it later”
New watch? New jewellery? New tech? If it matters to you, it needs to be on the policy. Simple as that.
Home Sweet Home… or Building Site
Knocking down walls. Upgrading kitchens. Grand Designs energy that Kevin McCloud would be proud of? It’s all great, until something goes wrong mid-renovation and no one knew the work was happening.
If your house is full of builders, your insurer should know before they arrive. Some policies can accommodate works, others need specialist works cover.
A Little Airbnb Won’t Hurt, Right
That’s right! Except does your insurer know?
From an insurance point of view, your policy was written based on You living there! Change that, and the cover needs to change too.
Guess Now, Regret Later
“It can’t be that much.” In our experience, it usually is.
Contents and valuables have a habit of creeping up over time. Underestimate it, and you’ll feel it when you claim.
Make sure you have an up to date valuation from a reputable valuer
Cover by Wishful Thinking
If only that were a thing… although I suspect I’d be out of a job if it were!
Wine cellar? Outbuilding? Second home abroad? It’s amazing how quickly “probably covered” becomes “unfortunately not.”
Oops… Let’s Not Do That Again
Most issues aren’t dramatic. They’re avoidable.
They come from being busy, making assumptions, and putting things off for another day.
That’s where we come in. At Macbeth we ask the questions you haven’t thought about yet, spot what’s missing, and make sure everything is covered properly, so when something does happen, it’s one less thing to worry about.
