Products Liability Insurance for Personal Protection Equipment (PPE)

May 11, 2020

The outbreak of Covid-19 has seen the Government take unprecedented steps to FastTrack the manufacture and supply of PPE. This includes allowing PPE equipment providing protection against Covid-19 which lacks the CE mark onto the market, provided products meet essential safety requirements as set out by the Health & Safety Executive (HSE)

Companies like BrewDog have quickly turned their hand from producing alcohol in their distillery in Ellon, Aberdeenshire, to producing essential hand sanitiser in response to the national shortage and are providing it free to charities and frontline workers.

In order to protect their own interests, companies that are changing from their normal production to producing PPE must ensure that their products liability insurers are fully up to speed with these changes in order to avoid invalidating their insurance.

Although products liability is not a compulsory class of insurance, it would not be prudent for either a new or existing company to trade without products liability insurance in place.
