When most people think about water damage, winter is usually the first season that comes to mind. Frozen pipes, icy temperatures and burst pipes are well-known cold-weather risks.
But here’s the surprise: water damage isn’t just a winter problem.
A quarter (25%) of all escape of water claims occur between July and September*, proving that water damage isn’t just a winter problem. While claims typically peak in January, July recorded the second-highest number of escape of water claims in 2025.**
What’s more, the average claim cost reached £8,595 in 2025** making even a small leak potentially expensive if left undetected.
Why are claims increasing in summer?
Summer is holiday season, which means many homes are left empty for days or even weeks at a time. During that period, a leaking washing machine hose, faulty dishwasher connection or overflowing water tank can cause significant damage before anyone notices.
Warmer weather can also put additional strain on outdoor water systems, including garden hoses, irrigation systems and pools, increasing the risk of leaks.
What counts as an escape of water claim?
Escape of water claims can arise from:
- Leaks from appliances such as washing machines and dishwashers
- Overflowing or leaking water storage tanks, expansion tanks and hot water cylinders
- Faulty toilets, cisterns, baths and fixed shower units
- Leaks from fixed central heating or underfloor heating systems
What starts as a small drip can quickly turn into a much bigger problem if it’s left unchecked.
How to reduce the risk
A few simple precautions can help prevent water damage:
Turn off the mains water supply
If you’re going away, turning off the water supply can stop a small leak becoming a major problem.
Check household appliances
Inspect washing machines, dishwashers and fridge freezers for signs of wear, damage or leaking hoses.
Look out for warning signs
Dripping taps, damp patches, discoloured walls and musty smells can all indicate a hidden leak that needs attention.
Don’t forget outdoor water systems
Turn off outdoor water supplies and empty pools when they’re not being used.
Ask someone to keep an eye on your home
If you’re away for an extended period, a trusted friend or neighbour can spot problems early. Remember that many insurance policies limit how long a property can be left unoccupied, often around 60 days.
Know where your stop tap is
Everyone in the household should know how to switch off the water in an emergency.
Keep plumbing maintained
Regular checks and replacing ageing pipework, fittings and connectors can help reduce the risk of unexpected failures.
Understanding your cover
Many insurance policies cover the cost of locating a leak, accessing the source and repairing any resulting damage. However, the faulty pipe, appliance or component that caused the leak will not be covered.
A quick review of your policy now could save any surprises if you ever need to make a claim.
What should you do if water escapes?
If a leak occurs:
- Turn off the main water supply immediately.
- Switch off nearby electricity if it’s safe to do so.
- Ventilate and dry the affected area as much as possible.
- Take photographs of the damage.
- Contact a plumber.
- Notify your broker or insurer and have your policy details ready.
Don’t let a small leak spoil your summer
Summer should be about relaxing, not worrying about what’s happening back at home. By taking a few simple preventative steps before you leave, you can reduce the risk of water damage and enjoy your time away with greater peace of mind.
Quote from Julie Burton – Head of Claims
“Claims are only part of the story. Behind every escape of water incident is a homeowner dealing with unexpected disruption, repairs and time out of their day. Prevention remains the simplest and most effective way to reduce that impact”.
