The word ‘chartered’ gets banded about a lot. It seems like everyone is chartered these days – accountants, marketers, financial advisers, but what does a chartered insurer really mean for you as a business or consumer? And why should you care if we’re chartered?
We’ve been chartered since 2010 (nearly 15 years) and our ‘chartered’ status has just been renewed. But what does it mean? In a nutshell, it’s a mark of trust. Of course, we could just tell you to trust us. But chartered status is about someone else confirming that you can trust us, and then going one step further and holding us accountable.
The Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) makes sure that we:
- Have professional qualifications, advanced knowledge and competence.
- Keep knowledge and skills up-to-date with Continuing Professional Development.
- Put our clients’ interests first.
- Align our values and business practices with the CII code of ethics.
And ‘Chartered’ status is only awarded to firms that meet the CII’s rigorous criteria.
“The downside of the insurance industry is that anyone can walk into insurance without qualifications. But accreditations and chartered status help to build trust. It’s why we insist that every team member gets their certificate of insurance. And it’s why we’re genuinely proud to be chartered – it’s not just a badge or a tick box.” Ben Butler, Managing Director, Macbeth
Because we know what’s involved in becoming chartered, we’d always recommend choosing an insurance broker with chartered status even if you decide not to go with Macbeth. That’s how strongly we feel about it.
