Having worked in the world of insurance claims for longer than I care to remember, the biggest tip I can give anyone who wants to save money on their insurance renewal is to report claims as fast as possible, especially when it’s your fault.

Own up if it’s your fault

So much time and money can be wasted by insurers investigating the circumstances and liability when they are told ‘it wasn’t my fault’, only to find out that actually, it was your fault. So it’s best to come clean quickly and provide your insurers with as many third party details as possible. it will almost always work in your favour.

Control third party costs

If the claim is reported as soon as possible, your insurers will have the opportunity to capture the third party’s claim and control the costs involved in their damage repairs and vehicle-hire costs.  This will prevent the potential for costs to be inflated by the third party. The lower the costs, the better the chance of your insurance renewal premium not sky rocketing.

Repairing your own vehicle 

The quicker you report the claim, the quicker your own vehicle repairs can be progressed. Some vehicle repairs can take longer than others due to the availability of parts and materials, so get in there quick. If you use an insurer-approved repairer, costs are kept in check and the repair quality is monitored by your insurers.
