Tesla Roadster. Space in the Boot*

February 12, 2018

Tesla cars are out of this world! Literally! It’s an exciting time for the electric vehicles and especially Tesla. Over the next few years, the Tesla Model Y and the Tesla Roadster will be launched in the UK to complement their already impressive fleet.

The new Tesla Roadster, especially, really does look exciting! Zero-to-60-mph in 1.9 seconds, with a top speed of more than 250 mph and a battery life said to provide 620 miles on a single charge.

So what does this mean for the insurance?

In my experience, insuring a Tesla is not cheap, despite its advanced safety features. The current Tesla Model S for example is a Group 50 rated car, which is the highest rating along with most high end sports cars. The reason is, there is not many authorised repairers, in addition, replacement parts are expensive especially the batteries. So even a small claim, or even a cracked windscreen can result in a huge final bill for the insurers. But in all fairness, like with a high end sports car, in the event of a claim the owner will insist the vehicle is repaired directly by the vehicle manufacturer.

This is why I always recommend my clients (including Tesla customers) consider a high net worth motor insurance policy, the cover is far stronger than standard motor policy, new car replacement for 24 months, agreed value in the event of a write off, like for like courtesy car and most importantly the client has the choice of where it can be repaired. The best part is on high end vehicles, the cost is comparable to the online comparison sites. So to me it’s a no brainer!

If you are considering purchasing a Tesla Roadster, or have already put your deposit down, it might be worth considering how you’re going to insure it.

*maybe! looking at the pics we cant imagine the tesla roadster is going to meet the golf clubs test but if Elon Musk has anything to do with it, anything is possible!
